When I first became a Christian in 1990, it never occurred to me that I should pray about who to date, or what I should do on a date, or ask God for success when it came to dating.
Honestly, I figured God wasn’t that interested and had more important things to do, such as solving food shortages in third world countries or bringing about world peace.

I was wrong! This hit me when I read what Jesus said to His followers in Matthew 10:28-31. First, Jesus says, “Don’t be afraid.”

“Don’t be afraid” are three of the best words for a single person to think about and focus on.
- Don’t be afraid of being single longer than some of your friends.
- Don’t be afraid of not having a date for the weekend.
- Don’t be afraid of having to explain the fact that you broke up with him or her.
- Don’t be afraid of what your friends will say if you end a dating relationship.

You get the point. If our fear of what others may do or say controls us, we will be consumed with what they want rather than what Jesus wants, and we will find ourselves constantly going to them for dating advice when we should be asking God to show us what He wants and to give us success.

Success in life is never achieved by solely seeking the suggestions of everyone but rather in simply surrendering to the will of Jesus. And let me just say, asking single friends for dating advice isn’t always wise. You don’t ask a baker how to perform brain surgery — he’s never successfully done it before! Find some happily married people or someone who has been in a relationship for some time to be your counsel.

The second thing Jesus said is that God knows each and every hair on our head. In other words, every single detail of our lives matters to Him.

So, if the second most important decision in our lives is who we date and ultimately marry, then I believe it makes perfect sense that our Heavenly Father doesn’t just want input on the decision, but rather for us to surrender complete control to Him.

After all, there is no one that cares about you more than God. Why would we not surrender this aspect of our lives to Him?
