11 1/2 Questions To Help You Date Without RegretsSample
Lucretia and I sat down one evening about 15 years ago and listed out about 21 questions we believe a couple should ask each other before dating or getting married.
I made a list and Lucretia made a list. Then we compared them. On her list was what I believe the best relationship question ever when it comes to getting married:
“Is this the kind of love God meant when He created Adam and Eve, the kind between two people that truly reflects His love for us (the 1 Corinthians 13 kind), or are you settling for less than God’s immeasurably more than anything you can ask or imagine?”
When I saw the question, I told her she needed to shorten it. She informed me I was the preacher and if I wanted a shorter question then I needed to do it, but I could not take away from the question.
I worked on it for over an hour and could not shorten it. I really do believe it is the best question ever.
If you were my daughter sitting in front of me and you told me, “I’m just not sure about this guy,” then I would tell you it is perfectly fine to push the pause button (or the stop button). I would tell you that you are valued and loved by Jesus and remind you that God really is a good God who wants good things for His children.
Just because a guy or girl is good to you does not mean he or she is good for you.
I’ve heard guys say they are dating a girl simply because she’s hot. So is hell! “Hot” is not a good reason to date. Girls don’t often say “hot,” but rather “cute.”
“Why are you dating him?”
“Because he’s cute.”
Cute and Christ-like don’t always go hand in hand!
Dating the right person is essential because dating often leads to marriage. If the foundation for your marriage is superficial rather than spiritual, you’re setting yourself up for your marriage to crash.
So think about who you’re dating (or considering dating) and ask yourself: Is this the kind of love God meant when He created Adam and Eve, the kind between two people that truly reflects His love for us (the 1 Corinthians 13 kind) or am I settling for less than God’s immeasurably more than anything I can ask or imagine?
