SWHW Bible Reading Plan: December 2021Sample
Top Takeaway from Somer Phoebus:
The second chapter of 2 Peter gives us a glimpse into the level of frustration Peter felt with false teachers confusing the people he loved so much. It's a scathing passage of Scripture but reminds us how essential it is always to be comparing the teachings of others to the Word of God. Read it as a warning because I believe that's exactly how it was intended.
And I love chapter three mainly because it wraps up both of Peter's letters beautifully by opening with a reminder that the purpose of these letters was to stir us up so that we can then stir each other up.
And why does he want to stir us up? Because Jesus is coming back!
Unfortunately, some of us have become dangerously numb to the news that Christ is returning. We would never admit to it, but how often do you think about it or long for it? And when you do think about it, does it change how you live? Our numbness to this promise will undoubtedly affect how intentional the Church is about sharing the gospel and stirring each other up.
Because what's the point of stirring each other up if it isn't for the return of Jesus? Good works are great, loving people well is fantastic, but neither are just commands to help you live a more moral life. These are behaviors that reflect the God who made us so that others can see Him. Then when they see Him, they can come to know Him, and then when they know Him, they can be with Him and us in eternity.
Hear me out: when we lose sight of eternity, we will lose motivation to prepare each other for it.
Don't lose sight of eternity. As Peter says when he is closing his letter in 2 Peter 3:18:
“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”
Father, I beg You to help me not to forget that You are coming back! And that whether my mortality takes me or You do, I will one day end up in Heaven with You forever. Thank You so much for that promise! I want to live like that's the most important thing to me. God help my heart to grasp the realness of Your love and the sureness of Your return. I love You. Amen.
About this Plan
Using God's Word as the foundation for our conversation, every devotional is written by women in the trenches of faith, family, and work, aiming to live for the glory of God and the good of others. There are enough devotions included for a typical five-day work schedule. We recommend plugging into your local church for the remaining two days of each week.
