A New Word for Love

Did you know that there used to be more than one word for love? There sure were! There was one word that described a kind of brotherly or sisterly type of love. There was another word that was used for a more romantic type of love.

But the kind of love Jesus brought the world? The best kind! Watch this video to learn what that love was called.

What an awesome word: agape. It’s a love that expects nothing in return. It’s all the aspects of the 1 Corinthians 13 love you read about yesterday, working together without any worry about “what’s in it for me?” Agape doesn’t even care if its kind of love is costly. It gladly pays the price to give of itself.

Today, you’ll read the story about the woman at the well mentioned in today’s video. Jesus spent time with a woman that most people who were Jewish like Jesus wouldn’t have even said one word to. But Jesus talked with her. Jesus answered her questions. Jesus knew about her sins, but He was kind and stayed right with her. Jesus revealed Himself as the Messiah to her. And, ultimately, Jesus died on the cross for all of us—including people just like her.

Jesus sees you, too! He will gladly spend time with you today. He knows what you need. He will give it to you. Jesus loves you even if you don’t love Him back. Jesus loves us with agape.

Ask yourself: If Jesus were sitting with me right now—in the flesh and fully visible to me—what would I like to talk with Him about?

Challenge yourself: This is a special one. Spend a little extra time praying today. Find a time and place where you can be uninterrupted for a bit. Imagine Jesus is really with you. What do you think He would like to say to you? Think about how much He loves you and how much He wants to give you. What would you like to say to Him in return?

Pray: God, thank You for spending time with me. Thank You for never pushing me aside even when I know I’m doing something sinful. Thank You for helping me find my way back to You. Thank You for how You love me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
