The Bible In AustraliaSample
Australia’s first charity was not the Bible Society, but The Benevolent Society. Originally known as the New South Wales Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge and Benevolence, it began in 1813 in order to serve the poor of the colony: poor and destitute children, single mothers and the abandoned elderly. But it closed in 1818, when the Bible Society took it on, stating that the Society would “afford them religious instruction and consolation in their distresses”, because it has always been right to care for those in need in both word and deed.
Is your religion stuck in your head, but not working itself out in your life? Or are you a ‘good deeds’ person, but have lost contact with the message?
Father, teach us to love you and to show that love to others with both words and deeds. Amen.
