What Does It Mean to Be Human?

DAY 17 OF 21

Significance: Knowing whose you are

When Daniel was taken into exile in Babylon, everything familiar was stripped away – his homeland, his temple, even his name. The Babylonians tried to re-shape his identity by giving him a new name, new education and new expectations. But despite all this pressure, Daniel knew who he truly was. He belonged to the Lord, and no empire could take that away.

Daniel’s decision not to eat the royal food might seem small compared to the enormous changes happening around him, but it was deeply significant. It was a declaration: I know whose I am.” By choosing faithfulness in something as ordinary as food, Daniel anchored himself in God’s truth rather than Babylon’s redefinition.

Our world today also tries to rename us. Culture tells us our worth comes from achievement, appearance, wealth or approval. Social media measures us by likes and follows. Workplaces value us for productivity. Even relationships can sometimes define us by what we do rather than who we are. Without realising it, we can start to live out of those false labels of striving, comparing or hiding.

But Scripture tells a different story. In Christ, we are chosen, loved, forgiven, adopted and secure (Ephesians 1:4–7). Our identity isn’t fragile or dependent on success; it rests on the unchanging character of God. Like Daniel, we are invited to resolve in our hearts to live out of this truth, even when the world pushes us in another direction.

Today, pause and consider: where am I seeking my identity? Is it in my job, reputation or accomplishments? Or is it firmly grounded in being God’s beloved child? When we know whose we are, we find freedom. We don’t have to chase significance or prove ourselves. Instead, we live from a place of confidence, peace and purpose.

Reflection:
Where do I look for my identity – in others’ approval, in my success, or in God’s truth?

Prayer:
Lord, remind me today that I am yours. Strip away the false labels I’ve carried, and root me in your love. Help me resolve, like Daniel, to live faithfully out of my true identity in you. Amen.
