What Does It Mean to Be Human?

DAY 20 OF 21

Participation: Living faithfully in a foreign land

Daniel and his friends didn’t hide away in Babylon; they showed up. They studied the language, engaged with the culture, and worked in the king’s service, but they did not compromise their faith. Their presence in the royal court became a witness to the God who gave them wisdom and strength.

This is what it means to participate as God’s people: not retreating from the world in fear, and not blending in by compromise, but faithfully living out our calling in the spaces God has placed us. Participation means showing up with integrity, doing our work with excellence, and letting our lives point beyond ourselves to the God we serve.

Notice that Daniel’s excellence was not for his own glory. Scripture says God gave him and his friends wisdom and understanding (1:17). Their success in Babylon wasn’t proof of their greatness but of God’s. Participation is about living as signposts, pointing others beyond Babylon to the greater kingdom of Christ.

In our workplaces, schools and communities, we face the same choice. Will we withdraw, compromise or faithfully engage? God calls us to live fully present in the world but distinctly His. Our kindness, integrity, creativity and faithfulness all become part of our witness.

Most of us haven’t been taken to a new country like Daniel, but we can still find ourselves in exile – living at odds with the culture around us. What would it look like to participate faithfully there, showing up with excellence and letting your life point to Him?

Reflection:
How can I participate faithfully in the place God has put me today – with integrity, excellence and witness?

Prayer:
Lord, help me to live faithfully in the place you’ve called me to. May my presence point others beyond me to your kingdom. Use my work, my words and my witness to bring glory to you. Amen.

About this Plan

What Does It Mean to Be Human?

What does it mean to be truly human? In a world obsessed with success, appearance and achievement, it’s easy to forget that our worth is not measured by what we do, own or accomplish. Journeying through Genesis, Psalms, the gospels and Daniel, this 21 day devotional series will bring you back to a simple truth: we are made in God’s image, deeply loved, and created with purpose.
