Presence: Trusting God in the midst of Babylon
Daniel was far from home. The temple in Jerusalem had been destroyed, the familiar rhythms of worship disrupted, and his life now revolved around Babylon’s palace. Yet even in this strange land, God’s presence was near. In fact, it was God who gave Daniel wisdom, favour and strength to live faithfully there.
One of the great lies of exile is that God is absent. When life feels unfamiliar or painful, we wonder: Where is God? Has He forgotten me? Daniel’s story reminds us that God is not bound by geography. His presence is not limited to Jerusalem, church buildings or “holy” places. He is Emmanuel, meaning ‘God with us’, even in Babylon.
Notice how God’s presence shows up quietly but powerfully in this story. It’s not a dramatic miracle; it’s the softening of an official’s heart, the wisdom given in study, the health sustained through vegetables and water. Often God’s presence is like that in our own lives – not always in the spectacular, but in daily mercies and unseen protection.
Babylon represents more than just a city in scripture; it symbolises places of pressure, compromise and testing. And yet it is exactly in those places that God proves Himself faithful. Daniel didn’t have control over his circumstances, but he trusted the One who did. In the same way, we may not be able to change where we are right now, but we can choose to trust that God is working in hidden ways.
Where is your Babylon right now? Maybe it’s a workplace that feels hostile to faith, a season of grief or a place of waiting. Wherever it is, God has not abandoned you. His presence goes with you. And His Spirit gives courage to stand, strength to endure and hope to keep going.
Reflection:
Where in my life right now do I need to trust that God’s presence is with me, even if I don’t see it clearly?
Prayer:
Lord, thank you that you are with me in every place. Help me to trust your quiet presence today. Open my eyes to see the ways you are working, even in places that feel like Babylon. Amen.
