Week 5 – Day 24 (Tuesday)
Psalm 131 – It Doesn’t Make Sense
Sometimes, we can’t help but compare ourselves to others. We evaluate ourselves and our productivity based on others. We determine our worth and the worth of others by their accomplishments.
Jesus tells the story about vineyard workers, some working all day and others only a few hours, yet the vineyard owner pays everyone the same at the end of the day. (Matthew 20:1-16). There was complaining afterwards.
The vineyard owner represents the Lord, and we are His workers, and the payment is God’s blessings upon us. If we’re not careful, we might become record-keepers and complain, comparing our efforts to others. When we keep detailed records, we miss out on appreciating what God has given us.
If we follow the wisdom of Psalm 131, we can let go of record-keeping and fully enjoy the grace we've been given, “…I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother…” (vs. 1-2)
