Week 6 – Day 29 (Monday)
Psalm 119:33-36 – Follow in Freedom
The Pharisees were master rule makers and scorekeepers. They added numerous laws to those God established (Deuteronomy 20:1-17), making religious life restrictive and legalistic. An expert in the Law approached Jesus in Matthew 22:36-40 to test His knowledge of God’s commands. “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God…Love your neighbor…”. These two commands formed the foundation of all teaching in God’s Law and the Prophets.
Jesus wanted to make a holy life something that was desired and a delight to live. Today’s passage from the psalms expresses the deep desire to follow God’s law – not as rules to be just obeyed, but as a loving way to live. When God’s laws are lovingly followed, they bring freedom, not bondage.
