Like a Tree – Devotional

DAY 16 OF 30

YOUR LIFE WITH GOD THAT EVERYONE SEES

A Presence That Makes Life More Breathable

“The greatest among you will be your servant.” - Matthew 23:11 (NIV)

Big Idea: Servanthood is becoming a steady, life-giving presence—like shade on a scorched day.

Most of us know the feeling: scorching heat, thirst, breathless weariness—then we step into shade and everything softens. Trees do that without announcement. They don’t demand attention. They simply stand in their place and make the space around them more comfortable.

This is a picture of Jesus-shaped public faith. Not performance. Not image-management. Not “look how spiritual I am.” But the overflow of someone who has been with God—so their presence brings relief. Your kindness becomes shelter. Your steadiness becomes safety. Your humility lowers the temperature in tense situations. Your compassion makes room for the weary.

The world is exhausted by self-promotion. One of the brightest lights you can shine is quiet servanthood.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Where are the “hot places” in your life right now—conflict, stress, suffering, division, exhaustion?
  2. What would it look like for you to become shade in these places (practical help, presence, listening, generosity, peace)?
  3. Where are you tempted to seek significance through recognition instead of service?

Prayer Focus: Lord Jesus, make me a servant. Let my life become a place of refuge where people can breathe again.

About this Plan

Like a Tree – Devotional

Psalm 1 describes the person who is like a tree planted by streams of water, whose leaves do not wither and who yields fruit in season. They are privately healthy, deeply planted and rooted in the Lord, and publicly fruitful. But how do we live like a tree? This 10-week devotional dives into the key principles of being rooted in God, delighting in His Word, and bearing lasting fruit for His Kingdom.
