Like a Tree – DevotionalSample

YOUR STRENGTH
Strength Through Surrender
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me…” - Galatians 2:20 (NIV)
“Love… always perseveres.” - 1 Corinthians 13:7 (NIV)
Big Idea: Love grows strong as you die to self—ring by ring—until endurance becomes part of your character.
Trees grow through surrender. They shed what’s dead, release what’s seasonal, and keep expanding ring by ring. Some rings are thick years of abundance; others are thin years of drought. But the tree is still becoming stronger—especially in the heartwood.
So are you. Mature love is not a fragile sentiment. It is tested strength—formed through forgiveness, sacrifice, patience, and costly obedience. This is where Jesus leads us: deny yourself, take up your cross daily, and follow. Love always costs something because it always moves away from self and toward others.
Your scars don’t disqualify you. In God’s hands, healed wounds become testimony—proof that love endured, and that grace held.
Reflection Questions:
- What “thin-ring season” are you in right now—loss, pressure, disappointment, fatigue, conflict?
- What is one act of surrender God is asking for (letting go of control, laying down pride, forgiving, serving, confessing)?
- How can you stay connected to the Source of love this week so your endurance doesn’t turn into hardness?
Prayer Focus: Jesus, form heartwood in me. Teach me surrender that produces love, love that produces endurance, and endurance that becomes strength for others.

About this Plan

Psalm 1 describes the person who is like a tree planted by streams of water, whose leaves do not wither and who yields fruit in season. They are privately healthy, deeply planted and rooted in the Lord, and publicly fruitful. But how do we live like a tree? This 10-week devotional dives into the key principles of being rooted in God, delighting in His Word, and bearing lasting fruit for His Kingdom.
