Miracles in Jesus' Name
Our God is a miracle-worker. Through Acts, we see that reality at work in the early church, with these miracles described as “signs and wonders.”
A sign points beyond itself to something greater. If you were driving through the mountains and saw a sign that said “Scenic Lookout”, you wouldn’t immediately get everyone out of the car, pose for photos with the sign, then go home. If you never went to the lookout itself, you’d miss the best part! Signs point to something.
Miracles are like that, in that they ultimately point to something even greater: Jesus Himself.
The famous miracle story of Acts 3 happens in an ordinary moment. Peter and John were simply on their way to a prayer meeting when they encountered a man who had been lame from birth. He sat at the gate every day asking for money, and Peter and John had probably walked past him numerous times before. But on this day, something changed. This story shows us a few truths about miracles.
First, miracles often begin with a clash between what we don’t have and what we do have.
The man asked Peter and John for money, but they didn’t have any. They could’ve been discouraged by this, but instead, their attention was on what they did have. Peter said: “...what I do have I give you.” God often works through our weaknesses.
Second, miracles happen through the authority of Jesus.
Peter said, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” This wasn’t a spiritual formula. Peter was operating under the authority of Jesus. He knew that the power was never his—it belonged to Jesus! And that’s still true today.
Third, miracles involve faith.
Peter told the man to get up and walk before anything had visibly changed. It was a moment of risk. What if nothing happened? Faith often means stepping forward before we see the result. In an instant, the man was healed of something that had afflicted him for over 40 years!
We are invited to trust Him, and to pray boldly in Jesus’ name. Miracles can happen today, both in and through you.
It’s part of His kingdom coming. Why? Because miracles don’t point to us.
They point to Him.
Let’s Pray
Jesus, You are the miracle worker. Help me trust Your power even when I feel weak. Give me faith to pray boldly and to rely on Your authority in every situation. Amen.

About this Plan

The book of Acts isn't just church history, it's an invitation. It tells the incredible story of what happened when Jesus’ followers lived in His name and by His Spirit after He returned to the Father. But it’s not just their story, it’s ours too. We get to continue what they started! When we surrender our lives to Jesus like those early disciples did, things begin to change. Join us as we explore power, miracles, boldness, salvation, freedom, perseverance, and the future in Jesus’ name through the book of Acts.
