Freedom in Jesus' Name
What does freedom look like to you?
Maybe it’s having choices. Maybe it’s control over your life. Maybe it’s the ability to express who you truly are.
If I close my eyes and imagine freedom, the image that comes to my mind is of flying over the ocean in some sort of hang glider. It’s an image of openness, joy, and escape—leaving behind constraints and rising above the waves.
But the freedom Jesus offers goes much deeper than just escaping circumstances.
In Acts 16, Paul and Silas arrive in the Roman city of Philippi. It was a world full of oppression. Slavery was common, and power belonged to those who controlled others. Into that world, Jesus sends His followers with something Rome cannot control: the authority of His name.
One day, they meet a slave girl who is exploited by both a spirit and her owners. After days of harassment, Paul finally turns and commands the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ, come out of her!” Instantly, she is free.
But freedom disrupts systems built on bondage. Her owners lose their profits, and Paul and Silas are beaten and thrown into prison. Yet even in chains, something remarkable happens.
Around midnight, Paul and Silas are praying and singing hymns to God. In the darkest place imaginable, they are worshipping. Then, suddenly, an earthquake shakes the prison. Doors fly open, chains fall off, but the freedom doesn’t stop there.
The jailer, terrified and expecting punishment, asks them, “What must I do to be saved?” That night he and his household discover even greater freedom: freedom in Jesus.
This story reminds us that freedom in Jesus is not just freedom from something—it is freedom into something.
Jesus frees us from the chains that control us: sin, fear, anxiety, striving, and the endless pressure to prove ourselves. But He also frees us into relationship with Him, where our souls can finally rest.
True freedom isn’t floating over the ocean in a hang glider.
It’s knowing that even in life’s darkest moments, the presence of Jesus is with you—and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
Let's Pray
God, thank you for the freedom you have given me. Help me to walk in it always, and to use my freedom to bring release in Jesus’ name to others who are captive. Amen.

About this Plan

The book of Acts isn't just church history, it's an invitation. It tells the incredible story of what happened when Jesus’ followers lived in His name and by His Spirit after He returned to the Father. But it’s not just their story, it’s ours too. We get to continue what they started! When we surrender our lives to Jesus like those early disciples did, things begin to change. Join us as we explore power, miracles, boldness, salvation, freedom, perseverance, and the future in Jesus’ name through the book of Acts.
