When God Breaks ThroughSample

When God Breaks Through

DAY 4 OF 7

Day 4 — God Breaks Through Lack

God instructs Elijah to go to a town where He had appointed a widow to supply him with food. As he arrives, he asks her for a jar of water. As she goes to get it, he then asks her for a piece of bread.

We must pause.

God said that he would be supplied with food. Personally, I would have expected a full meal, not this.

But as the story continues, the widow says, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour and a little olive oil.”

Pause again.

But God said He had instructed the widow to give Elijah food. Was the widow unprepared? Why wasn’t the food ready? As I think about this, all I can conclude is that God had already chosen and assigned her, yet she had not fully understood it until this moment.

As we continue, we see that this widow has real need. Her survival and that of her son are at stake. This was their last meal, and Elijah is asking for it. I can only imagine her thoughts as he speaks to her and calls her to trust the word of the Lord.

Yet let’s not miss this: Elijah interrupts her plan of preparing to die.

God is meeting her there—
in her fear,
in her lack,
in what she believed were her final moments.

And then she receives a promise:
“The jar of flour will not be used up, and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.” (v. 14, NVI).

In that moment, she trusted. She went home and did as Elijah asked.

But after some time, her son stopped breathing. She believed she was being judged. That this was the result of her past sin. Her struggle was no longer just physical lack. It had reached her heart.

Elijah cried out to the Lord, and the boy’s life returned to him. He was dead, and God raised him.

God did not just provide in a moment. He sustained her, restored her son, and showed her that His word is true. He saw her.

Reflection:

Have you prepared for the worst because all you see is lack? Do you feel forgotten? Remember the Lord, Jehovah Jireh. He is still the One who provides.

About this Plan

When God Breaks Through

If you think God breaking through is about favoritism, perfection, background, or status, think again. His intervention is not reserved for the most qualified or gifted. He shows up because He can, because He wills, and because it is in His character. It is who He is. This 7-day Plan walks you through the stories of real people facing real situations and shows you the same God showing up in every one of them. Again and again, Scripture reminds us: He is still the God who breaks through.
