Galatians: Chapter by Chapter

DAY 4 OF 6

From Slavery to Freedom

Paul expresses deep concern for the Galatians because they were returning to legalism after experiencing the freedom found in Christ. He compares life under the law to slavery and life in Christ to true sonship.

Through Jesus, believers are no longer spiritual slaves living under fear and condemnation. They are sons and daughters of God with full access to the Father.

I’ve gone through counseling because I believed the wrong story about what was happening in my life. Believing the wrong story will trick you into the wrong identity.

That’s exactly what legalism does spiritually. It convinces believers they are still slaves when Jesus has already declared them sons and daughters. It tells people they are only valuable if they perform well enough.

Paul uses the contrast between Hagar and Sarah to illustrate two covenants: one representing bondage under the law and the other representing freedom through God’s promise.

Many believers unknowingly return to spiritual slavery by basing their identity on performance, comparison, or religious expectations. But Jesus calls us into freedom — freedom from guilt, fear, and striving.

Freedom in Christ does not lead us away from God. It draws us closer to Him through love and relationship.

Jesus did not save us to live in spiritual bondage but to walk in freedom as God’s children.

Respond to God’s Word

  • Ask God to reveal any lies shaping your identity.
  • Replace those lies with what Scripture says about you.
  • Spend time thanking God that you are His child.
