Day 7: Two Masters
Scripture: Matthew 6:24 (NIV)
"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."
Jesus doesn't say it's hard to serve two masters. He says it's impossible. Eventually, you'll have to choose.
That choice shows up in real situations. The job offer that pays more but requires you to compromise. The shortcut that saves time but involves dishonesty. The deal that looks good on paper but costs you something you can't get back.
And it's not always about money. The "other master" can be reputation. Popularity. Comfort. The approval of people whose opinion you've given too much power to. Anything that, when it conflicts with what God is asking, makes you hesitate.
Here's what's worth sitting with: you probably already know what your competing master is. The thing that, when it goes up against your faith, you're not sure which one wins. Most people do. They just don't say it out loud.
Jesus isn't trying to make you feel guilty. He's trying to make you honest. Because you can't deal with something you won't name. And you can't build a life of integrity while secretly serving something that pulls you in the opposite direction.
The good news is that choosing God as your master doesn't mean you can't have success, money, or influence. It means those things don't get to make your decisions for you.
Reflect: What's the thing in your life that most competes with God for your loyalty? Be honest.
Today: Name it. Write it down. Then pray: "God, I want you to be my master. Help me mean that."
