Striving is Finished

What would change in you if you truly believed there was nothing left to prove?

Yesterday, we saw that a freed heart can still live like a captive. The deepest reason is exhaustion. Many of us are tired in a way sleep does not fix, because somewhere inside, we are still trying to earn what we have already been given. We are working for a verdict that was handed down long ago.

Here is the word your weary soul needs. By one offering, Jesus has perfected forever those who are being made holy. Read that slowly. Perfected. Forever. Past tense. The verdict on you is already in, and it is not pending your performance this week. The cross was not the start of your effort. It was the end of it. When Jesus said, "It is finished," He was speaking over your striving, too.

This is why Jesus does not call out to the impressive and the sorted. He calls the weary and the burdened, and He offers rest. Not a holiday. Rest for your soul. The kind that comes when you finally lay down a weight you were never meant to carry.

There is even a rest, the writer of Hebrews says, that we are invited to enter. And then he says something strange: make every effort to enter that rest. The only striving left for a free person is the striving to stop striving, to actually trust that the work is done.

So before we do the good work of renewing the mind, we lay something down. You are not on trial. The Judge is your Father, and He has already smiled. Tomorrow, we start changing the way we think, beginning with the most misunderstood word in the Christian life.

PRAYER

Father, I am tired of trying to earn what You have already given. Thank You that the verdict over me is finished and good. Teach me to rest, not because I have done enough, but because Jesus did. Amen.
