Feeling Bad... or Changing Your Mind?
DEVOTIONAL
What if the word you have always dreaded is actually one of the kindest words in the Bible?
For a lot of us, repentance is a heavy word. It conjures up feeling awful, coming forward, apologising, promising to do better, then failing and starting the cycle again. For many believers, that cycle becomes their entire spiritual experience, and it is exhausting, because the focus never really changes. It stays fixed on us and on our failure.
But the word Jesus used does not mean "feel bad." It means change your mind. Metanoia. To think again. To see differently. When Jesus began to preach, His first word was not "regret." It was "repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." In other words: change the way you think, because a whole new world has just opened to you.
Do you see how that flips it? Repentance is not grovelling your way back into God's good books. You are already in them. Repentance is the daily, freeing work of changing your mind from slave-thinking to son-thinking. It is catching the old lie ("I have to earn this, I am still a sinner at heart, God is disappointed") and trading it for the truth ("I am free, I am righteous in Christ, my Father delights in me").
Godly sorrow has its place. Feeling the weight of something that hurts God or others is healthy. But sorrow is not the destination. Sorrow that never changes your mind just curdles into regret, and regret only ever looks backwards. True repentance looks forward into the kingdom.
So repentance is not the bad news before the good news. It is the good news, applied to the way you think. Tomorrow, we put it to work on the thing that has quietly kept many believers stuck: a wrong idea about grace.
REFLECTION
Has repentance felt to you more like feeling bad, or like changing your mind? What would shift if it became the second?
FREEDOM STEP
Catch one slave-thought today (a lie about who you are or how God sees you), name it, and deliberately replace it with what is true in Christ.
PRAYER
Father, thank You that turning to You is not grovelling, it is coming home in my thinking. Renew my mind. Where I have believed lies about myself and about You, lead me gently into the truth. Amen.
