Mary Magdalene was a loyal disciple and follower of Jesus during His ministry on Earth. She had a special friendship with Him for many reasons. First off, at some point, Scripture tells us that Jesus had cast seven demons out of Mary (Luke 8:1-2)—she had seen Him work a miracle personally in her own life. And even though culturally, as a woman in this time, she had little value in the eyes of society, yet Jesus saw her—really saw her—and He chose her to be a part of His inner circle. So you can imagine the way she felt when the One who saved her and spoke worth and value into her life was killed on the cross and buried in a tomb. This is a level of despair and hopelessness we can hardly fathom. But then, something miraculous happened. Mary didn’t find Jesus’ body waiting for her in the tomb; instead, she found the tomb empty. Shock, confusion, despair, rage—she likely felt all the feelings with that discovery.
For Mary, this might’ve felt like the end at the time, but for those of us living on the other side of the resurrection, we know this was evidence of the most important miracle in history. We know this is the evidence that Jesus defeated death, once and for all. Do you have a moment in your life that felt like the end? A circumstance that seemed hopeless? Talk to God about that topic specifically this week, with the resurrection in mind. How can you hope for more to the story with the hope that only Christ can give?

About this Plan

The story of Easter really is the story of a miracle. A miracle preceded by many others that all ultimately point us to one thing: the truth of who God is, how God loves us, and the way God is working on our behalf. In this devotional, we’ll look at three major miracles recorded in the gospel of John. As we do, we’ll see that these miracles were all pointing us toward something greater. We’ll see the reveal of the greatest miracle of all: the resurrection of Jesus.
