DAY 16 OF 21

Day 16 – BE LOVE: Number One Rule

Scripture: Matthew 22:37–40; Galatians 5:14; 1 Corinthians 13:1–2

Too many rules.

That’s one of the reasons some people give for choosing not to follow Jesus. They feel like there’s too much to keep up with. Too many things you can’t do. Too many expectations. It can make faith seem exhausting or boring.

If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re not alone.

In the Old Testament, there really were a lot of laws to follow. And many people became so focused on keeping every detail right that they missed the bigger picture. That’s why Jesus stepped in and reframed everything.

When Jesus was asked what mattered most, He didn’t list dozens of rules. He gave one clear answer: love God with everything you are, and love others as you love yourself. Jesus explained that ALL the law and the prophets hang on these two commands. Everything else flows from them.

That doesn’t mean the other instructions don’t matter. They do. But without love, they lose their purpose. Rules without love lead to frustration, pride, or burnout. Love is what gives them meaning.

When love is the focus, everything else starts to fall into place. Loving God shapes how you worship, how you make decisions, and what you choose to walk away from. Loving others shapes how you treat people, how you speak, and how you respond when things get hard.

Paul reinforces this idea when he says that even the most impressive spiritual actions mean nothing without love. You can do all the right things and still miss the point if love isn’t behind them.

To be love means letting love be your motivation, not just your behavior. It’s not about following rules perfectly. It’s about living a life shaped by love.

It may sound simple.
But it changes everything.
