Despite EverythingSample

Work on your character, not on someone else's
Marriage has a unique ability to reveal things about ourselves that we did not know. The person next to us sees our weaknesses better than anyone else—and cannot help but see them. That is why marriage can be either a place of healing or a constant pain.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus speaks bluntly and directly about how we are better at seeing the speck in someone else's eye than the plank in our own. These words are especially true in the context of marriage. We are quick to notice others' mistakes and slow to acknowledge our own.
Most conflicts in marriage are exacerbated not by the problem itself, but by pride, self-justification, and unwillingness to change. We want the other person to become gentler, more attentive, more spiritual—but Jesus starts with us.
Jesus emphasizes the value of gentleness—the inner strength of a person who does not fight for their own righteousness but is willing to learn, admit mistakes, and allow God to change their heart. It is this attitude that creates security in relationships and opens the door for real change.
Marriage grows not when we learn to criticize correctly, but when we learn to change humbly. The beginning of restoration almost always looks the same: "Lord, start with me."
Questions for reflection:
- What annoys me most about my partner—and what does that reveal about me?
- Am I ready to honestly look at the "log" in my own heart?
- What might my gentleness look like in practice today?
Prayer:
Lord, help me to see myself through Your eyes. Teach me gentleness and humility, and begin to change our relationship from my heart.
Amen.
