Guard your heart to remain faithful

When we discuss faithfulness in marriage, we often focus solely on actions. But Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount, goes much deeper—to the heart. That is where decisions begin that either strengthen the covenant over time or gradually undermine it.

Fidelity is rarely destroyed suddenly. More often than not, it is a slow process: innocent glances, comparisons, fantasies, emotional intimacy outside of marriage. What remains hidden in the heart for a long time eventually begins to shape behavior. That is why Jesus speaks so insistently about inner purity—not as a restriction, but as protection.

Purity of heart is not about perfection, but about vigilance. It is about honesty before oneself and God. It is about the willingness to stop in time and not play with what can destroy trust. Where the heart is not guarded, fidelity becomes vulnerable.

Marriage flourishes not where there are no temptations, but where there is a conscious decision to keep the covenant. People who guard their hearts gradually begin to see more of God—in themselves, in others, and in their relationships. It is this closeness to God that becomes the source of true faithfulness.

Prayer:

Lord, guard my heart and teach me vigilance. Help me to honor our covenant and live in faithfulness before You and my loved one.
