DAY 2 OF 20

Finding Joy When Life Gets Messy

Let’s be real—when life feels upside down, finding joy often seems impossible. Maybe you bombed a test, your friendships feel off, or you’re just having one of those “blah” days. At times like these, the idea of choosing joy can sound obnoxious. Like someone telling you to smile while it’s pouring rain.

But Romans 5 offers a deeper take. It talks about rejoicing even in tough times. That doesn't mean we're supposed to put on a fake happy face whenever things get rough. Paul, who wrote this letter, is actually onto something more realistic. Because we know God, hard times aren’t the end of the story, they’re just part of it.

Practicing joy is hard, sometimes grueling, but every difficult rep is building you up, whether you see it in the moment or not. Endurance, character, and hope don’t come from the easy days. They’re forged in the struggle.

Real joy doesn’t mean pretending you’re not hurting. It’s about knowing who stands with you through it all. God isn’t distant or ignoring you. He’s right there, pouring His love into your life, one day at a time. That love is your foundation. Even in the middle of chaos, it’s what keeps you steady. You might not see the end result yet, but you can trust that something strong and good is growing.

Application:
Take a few minutes with your phone or a notebook and jot down three moments from the last week when you sensed God’s presence or help. Maybe it was a message from a friend that lifted your mood, or just a calm feeling when you needed it most. Pause and thank God for showing up, even in the small things.
