Godly wisdom does not have impure intentions

“The wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure” (James 3:17 NIV)

The first characteristic of true wisdom is purity, which stands in stark contrast to the so-called wisdom of the false teachers. These individuals were driven by impure motives, seeking personal gain, power, or prestige, with truth and sincerity being pushed to one side. Their outward piety was merely a mask for their real motives.

Purity is deeply valued in the Bible. Jesus says that “the pure in heart” are blessed (Matthew 5:8 NIV). Paul wants believers to be blameless and pure, reflecting their identity as children of God in a corrupt world (Philippians 2:14-15). He also calls his colleague Titus to set an example of moral purity and dignity (Titus 2:7). Believers should not have hidden motives or a separate agenda. This applies to every area of life: within the church, at work, with friends, and in their homes.

People who do have a hidden agenda are not truly wise. They may be clever and accomplish much, but they lack the moral purity that God values. That’s why their so-called wisdom doesn’t endure — it has no lasting value in God's Kingdom.
