Mercy

“The wisdom that comes from heaven is… full of mercy and good fruit” (James 3:17 NIV)

People who are filled with God's wisdom reflect His character. Because God is merciful toward people, His children also show mercy and compassion to those around them.

The word “mercy” is not commonly used in our everyday language. Yet it is a beautiful word. It implies three things:

1. You notice and acknowledge the needs of others.

2. Their suffering moves your heart; you feel compassion.

3. You take action to help; you show mercy.

In Luke 10:25-37, Jesus tells a story that clearly illustrates this. A traveler is attacked by robbers and left badly injured by the side of the road. A passerby sees this man’s need (1), feels compassion for him (2), and does everything he can to care for him (3). The mercy shown by this passerby has become a timeless example of genuine love and compassion.

Showing mercy rarely brings personal gain. In fact, it often costs time, money, and effort. Still, James teaches that mercy is wise, and Jesus instructs us: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36 NIV).
