Wisdom From Heaven

DAY 1 OF 10

True wisdom

“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.” (James 3:13 NIV)

The verse above comes from a letter written by the apostle James. He wrote to fellow Christians to encourage, teach, and correct them where needed. He did so as “a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ” (James 1:1 NIV), and it is this authority that gives his words enduring relevance, even centuries later.

About halfway through his letter, James addresses the topic of wisdom. This was a critical issue because many people claimed to be wise teachers, yet their actions led to “disorder and every evil practice” (James 13:16 NIV). Why was that? Because their supposed wisdom was driven by bitter envy and selfish ambition. These people were just seeking their own benefit, often at the expense of others. Perhaps you’ve encountered people like that yourself? They can cause a lot of harm!

In contrast to the wisdom of these false teachers, James promotes the humble wisdom that comes from God in heaven. He refers to it as “wisdom that comes from heaven” (James 3:17 NIV). James then lists seven characteristics of this wisdom, which we will explore in detail over the next few days.

Do you think it’s important to be wise and understanding? What does wisdom mean to you?
