Seeking peace

“The wisdom that comes from heaven is... peace-loving” (James 3:17 NIV)

Once again, the wisdom from God is contrasted with the earthly, natural, and even demonic wisdom that people often display.

James had already pointed out that earthly wisdom results in “disorder and every evil practice.” Paul writes about this in Galatians 5:19-20, listing things like hatred, discord, jealousy, selfishness, and dissension as consequences of worldly desires. These actions cause great harm among believers.

These consequences should come as no surprise when we consider their origin. They are fueled by God's adversary, the “diabolos,” the one who stirs up trouble and confusion. He provokes division between people and against God.

In stark contrast to this strife, the wisdom that comes from God shines brightly. It is peace-loving because it is inspired by the Prince of Peace. Believers are called to “if it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” (Romans 12:18 NIV) This is not always easy! Heavenly, peace-loving wisdom often faces opposition—whether in society, among those around us, or even within our own hearts.

The traditional ‘Prayer of Saint Francis’ can be a helpful guide here:

'Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me bring love.
Where there is offence, let me bring pardon.
Where there is discord, let me bring union.'
