Considerate and gentle wisdom

“The wisdom that comes from heaven is… considerate” (James 3:17 NIV)

What does the phrase “considerate wisdom” mean? The word used here, ἐπιειϰής, can also be translated as “agreeable, gentle, benevolent.” It implies not insisting on one's own rights or demanding justice when wronged. Instead, it involves responding with patience and kindness when others fail or make mistakes. This quality is expected of every Christian: “Let your gentleness be evident to all” (Philippians 4:5 NIV, see also Titus 3:2).

The source of this kindness is God Himself. He often responds so gently when we fall short... As we read in Psalm 86:

“You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to You.” (Psalm 86:5 NIV).

“You, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.” (Psalm 86:15 NIV)

God's kindness is a great gift to us. If He were to repay us according to our sins, we would perish!

As children of God, we are called to reflect His character. We are encouraged to live by His example. This is often a struggle because it conflicts with our natural selfishness. Additionally, this type of wisdom is very different from what the world expects, which makes it a powerful witness to God’s goodness.
