Sincere wisdom

“The wisdom that comes from heaven is… sincere.” (James 3:17 NIV)

As the final quality of “the wisdom that comes from heaven,” James mentions sincerity. This is closely connected to purity, which he listed first.

Jesus showed how important sincerity is. He strongly criticized the hypocritical attitude of the Pharisees, a respected religious group. They prayed in public “to be seen by others” (Matthew 6:5 NIV). When they gave to the needy, they blew trumpets so that everybody would notice their generosity (see Matthew 6:2). Anything to be praised by people! Because of that, Jesus said their prayers and gifts had no real value.

Heavenly wisdom doesn’t seek approval or praise from others. What really matters is how God sees our lives. There’s no point in trying to look religious or holy on the outside—God can see our hearts. What truly matters to Him is honesty and sincerity.

It’s easy to judge the Pharisees and think, “They were such show-offs. We’d never act like that.” But would we? Do we sometimes pretend to be better than we really are? In what situations are we tempted to do that?
