DAY 17 OF 40

Week 4 – Day 17 (Monday)

Psalm 119:49-51 – Counting the Cost

Jesus now redirects His focus to crucial lessons His disciples need to learn, specifically discussing His upcoming death. This was a difficult truth for the disciples to accept, and Peter insists it will never happen! Jesus shares an important lesson about yielding to His Father’s will (Matthew 16:21-26). “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?... (vs. 25-26)

There are key words in today’s psalm that must be carefully examined. The psalmist refers to himself as a “servant,” indicating his submission to God as Master of his life. He also speaks of “comfort in my suffering,” which implies that even when we are yielding to God, we will still face suffering.

During Jesus’ time on earth, He endured much suffering. When we follow Him in obedience, we will face suffering too, but His promise stands firm: He is our “comfort in suffering.”

Do you need to count the cost of discipleship today?
