Pilgrimage

DAY 22 OF 40

Week 4 – Day 22 (Saturday)

Psalm 106:44-47 – The Flow of Mercy

Peter approaches Jesus with the question, “How many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me?” Jesus responds with the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant (Matthew 18:21-35). This story is about a servant who begs mercy from the king for the debts he owes. The king shows mercy and forgives the debt, only for this forgiven servant to turn around and be unforgiving of a fellow servant who owes him.

The Psalms are full of lessons about showing mercy, with God’s mercy to the Children of Israel as the greatest example. Psalm 106 recounts their many sins, their cries for help and forgiveness, and His showering of mercy upon them.

Before we ask, “How many times shall I forgive?” maybe we need to look back at our own litany of transgressions and see the generous trail of God’s mercy in our lives.

As mercy has flowed to you, let it flow through you.
