DAY 5 OF 40

Week 2 – Day 5 (Monday)

Psalm 130:1-6 – The Penitent Heart

Matthew 9 begins with the story of a paralyzed man brought to Jesus for healing (vs. 1-9). The man is desperate and relies on friends to bring him to Christ. It’s interesting that Jesus tells the man, “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven.” (vs. 2) The man was brought to be healed. What was Jesus saying? This wasn’t an assumption that the man's paralysis was caused by sin that needed forgiving. Jesus was addressing the man’s bigger problem. As difficult as it is to be paralyzed, it’s even more serious to be trapped and lost in sin. Of course, the Lord cares about the whole person, and the man leaves whole in both body and spirit.

The writer of today’s psalm is moved by a burden of sin and aware of the powerful assurance of forgiveness. Our Lord lovingly embraces a penitent heart, and He removes our sin “…as far as the east is from the west.” (Psalm 103:12)

The Lenten Season is a time of repentance. What might be burdening you today? There is powerful forgiveness for the penitent heart.
