Holy Week

DAY 3 OF 8

Holy Tuesday

This day continues from Jesus' cleansing of the Temple to a verbal confrontation with the Pharisees and Sadducees. With various attempts to trap Jesus in His words, these conversations end in Jesus calling out the nation’s spiritual leaders for their hypocrisy. They had become a shell of what God had ordained for them, and Jesus called them out for their poor leadership of people who genuinely wanted to seek God.

This spoke to a deeper problem that both religious leaders and regular people have, a tendency of becoming numb to the things of God. On this day, Jesus urges His followers to be alert and ready for the coming Kingdom of Heaven. To shake off any apathy in their soul and to be diligent in spirit, in their life and the people around them.

Today, more than ever, there is plenty to distract and numb ourselves from the realities of God, and Jesus' words only increase in their urgency as the day of His return draws all the nearer. Between an endless news cycle, devices designed to take all our attention and our own lives to run, we can become trapped in a culture that connects us to everything except the Holy Spirit. Our souls become inattentive to the Kingdom of Heaven, and before we know it, we’ve drifted from the heart of God. Jesus realigns our priorities: Before all, God wants our hearts and attention.

Reflection:

  • Ask the Holy Spirit, “Where have I grown sleepy in my soul?”
  • Take a break from a distraction today (eg, social media, entertainment) and spend that drawing closer to God.

About this Plan

Holy Week

Welcome to Holy Week. For centuries, the Church has used this week to dedicate the fullness of its attention to Christ’s passion, resurrection, and the events leading up to it. Over the next 8 days, we will explore the gospel accounts of Holy Week and how it still impacts our everyday lives, even nearly two thousand years later.
