Maundy Thursday
What would you do if you knew you’d die tomorrow? This kind of question can reveal the true nature of a person and what they find most important. On this day, Jesus revealed what is most important to Him and the heart of God for humanity. He took His closest friends to a Passover dinner and taught them about what was to come and how to respond. In the midst of these conversations, Jesus showed God's heart by initiating the Lord's Supper (Holy Communion/Eucharist) and the washing of the disciples' feet.
Communion signifies what God has done so that we might know Him; in representing Jesus’ blood spilled and body broken so that sin would no longer separate us from Him. Even thousands of years later, we are given the chance to experience our redemption once again by remembering the cost of Christ’s sacrifice and the adoration that can well up from our hearts.
Christ’s heart was further revealed in washing the disciples' feet. More so, it’s a reminder of who we are to become as the Holy Spirit works on our souls. Peter admitted that Jesus should have His feet washed, but this reveals just how power and honour work in the Kingdom of God. Though we now have the highest honour with God, this is a drive for us to serve and love others.
Reflection:
- Take communion today and reflect deeply on the weight of the cross.
- Ask God to reveal the servanthood of your heart, or if there are areas of your life you need to humble yourself before Him.
