Holy Week

DAY 6 OF 8

Good Friday

Good Friday is the darkest day in history… and the most glorious.

John’s Gospel is careful to show us that Jesus was not a helpless victim swept up in injustice. He stepped forward in the garden. He confronted authority before Pilate. He carried His cross. Even in death, He declared, “It is finished.” The cross was not a tragic accident; it was a triumphant completion of God's redemptive mission.

Isaiah foretold a suffering servant, “pierced for our transgressions” (Isaiah 53:5). On Good Friday, that promise became flesh and blood. The sin of the world: betrayal, violence, pride, greed, vulgarity, converged on one innocent Man. And instead of calling down angels, Jesus absorbed it. He did not overcome evil by force, but by self-giving love.

The cross reveals both the seriousness of our sin and the immeasurable depth of God’s mercy. As Fleming Rutledge writes, “The crucifixion is the shocking demonstration of God’s judgment and God’s love held together.” At Calvary, justice and mercy meet.

When Jesus said, “It is finished,” He was not sighing in defeat. He was announcing that the work of redemption is complete. The debt was paid. The barrier was removed. The way is open. The veil is torn not just so we can access God, but also so God can reach us again.

Good Friday invites us not to rush past the pain, but to sit at the foot of the cross. To see the cost. To feel the weight. And to receive the grace Jesus has given.

Reflection:

  • What does the cross reveal about the seriousness of sin in your own life?
  • Where do you need to trust that “It is finished” truly applies to you?
  • Spend a few quiet minutes thanking Jesus for His sacrifice.

About this Plan

Holy Week

Welcome to Holy Week. For centuries, the Church has used this week to dedicate the fullness of its attention to Christ’s passion, resurrection, and the events leading up to it. Over the next 8 days, we will explore the gospel accounts of Holy Week and how it still impacts our everyday lives, even nearly two thousand years later.
