Jesus Be The Name

“Jesus be the name ever on my lips. It’s sweeter every time that I call on it.”

This lyric has become so much more than something nice to sing; it has become something I’ve found to be truer than true. It’s not that the name of Jesus has become more powerful over the years, but it has become sweeter with every year that passes. His name holds history.

When I was young, I dealt with a lot of fear. Most nights, I’d wake up paralyzed in fear and would end up running to my parents’ room for comfort. But I remember when I learned the power of the name of Jesus. I can recall waking up, feeling afraid, but instead of running to my parents’ room, I began to whisper the name of Jesus. As I began to say that sweet and powerful name, the fear began to leave, and my room was flooded with peace. I learned there's something about the name of Jesus.

The Bible says in Psalm 145:18 says “The Lord is near to all who call on Him.”

In recent years, I have dealt with some anxiety. I found myself, again, waking up in the night with my mind filled with worry. But instead of letting the anxiety live in my mind and heart, I began to speak the name of Jesus, and His peace would make its home in me instead.

What is it about the name of Jesus that changes things? Why does His name hold this kind of power?

Philippians 2:9-11 (NIV) says,

“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

The name of Jesus was given all authority and dominion over fear and anxiety, over sickness and disease, over sin, and even over death itself. Wherever you find yourself, wherever you are, you can call upon His mighty name and trust that He will draw near to you.

Lord Jesus, I thank you for the power and authority that is in your name. I thank you that anywhere I am, I can call on your name, and you come close to me. I pray that your name will get ALL the glory in my life.
