I Call God

What’s the most famous telephone number in America? 911. It’s the number you call when you need help now.

When I was a kid, someone told me there was an “emergency verse” in the Bible — Jeremiah 33:3 (NIV), “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” What a promise: I call God, and He answers.

Jeremiah wrote those words from captivity. He was in a real emergency, and when he called on heaven, God responded. But God didn’t just show up to rescue him — He showed up to reveal things Jeremiah could not yet see.

God still works that way today. He meets us on the mountain and in the valley, on the best days and the days we don’t want to get out of bed. Not because He is transactional, but because He is relational. He is both transcendent over all things and yet deeply present with us.

So when we sing, “I call God and He answers,” we’re not declaring that God gives us everything we want; we’re declaring that He gives us what we don’t even know we need.

Sometimes His answer is yes. Sometimes it’s wait. Sometimes it’s something better. But His answer always flows from His love.

Prayer isn’t just our emergency line — it’s our lifeline.

Whatever you’re facing today, call on Him. He is listening. And when He answers, you may discover that the greatest miracle isn’t just what He does for you; it’s what He reveals to you.

Lord, help me trust You when the answer isn’t what I expected. Give me faith to believe You are working, even when I can’t see it. Remind me that when I call, You always answer with Your presence, Your wisdom, and Your love. Amen.
