YOUR HELP
The Counsel Beneath the Counsel
“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked…” - Psalm 1:1 (NIV)
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” - Proverbs 23:7 (NKJV)
Big Idea: Your life follows your deepest counsel—often the beliefs you don’t even realize are shaping you. God’s Word and Spirit can reach that deep.
Psalm 1 doesn’t start with behavior modification; it starts with counsel. Because counsel shapes thought, and thought shapes life. But as adults, it’s not just the advice we hear today—it’s the counsel we absorbed years ago: family narratives, survival strategies, cultural scripts, old wounds, pride, shame, fear, insecurity.
Some of that counsel sits “below awareness.” You might not be able to name it, but it still drives you: “I have to prove myself.” “I can’t trust anyone.” “God is disappointed in me.” “If I fail, I’m finished.” That’s counsel. And if it goes unchallenged, it can form your walk and your life.
Those thoughts can change to, “I’ve been chosen by God.” “God sings over my life.” “God loves me unconditionally.” “God’s grace is enough for me.”
The hope is that God doesn’t only correct surface actions—He reaches roots. He brings His counsel with grace, exposing what’s false and replacing it with what’s true. A blessed life isn’t a life absent pressure; it’s a life formed by the right voice.
Reflection Questions:
- What “counsel” has been shaping your inner conversation lately—fear, hurry, comparison, control, resentment? What kind of biblical counsel can reshape your inner conversation this week?
- What belief about God, yourself, or life might need to be challenged by Scripture?
- Where do you need to invite God’s counsel this week—relationships, decisions, finances, identity, emotional patterns?
Prayer Focus: Lord, lead me in Your counsel. Expose what’s false in me and anchor me in what’s true.
