Like a Tree – Devotional

DAY 14 OF 30

YOUR UPKEEP

Forgiveness Keeps the Sap Flowing

“Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” - Luke 6:37 (NIV)
“Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” - 2 Corinthians 4:16 (NIV)

Big Idea: Forgiveness is spiritual maintenance—without it, the heart dries out; with it, grace circulates and renewal returns.

Many adults are more dehydrated than they realize. Not physically, but spiritually. The signs can be subtle: cynicism, impatience, numbness, quick irritation, low-grade heaviness, or a shrinking capacity for joy.

Unforgiveness is often a major cause. It quietly shuts down the flow. It clogs the inner life with resentment, disappointment, and re-litigated pain. It doesn’t only affect relationships, but can also affect our prayer life, our perspective, and emotional resilience.

Forgiveness restores circulation. It is not denial. It is not excusing harm. It is releasing the right to punish and entrusting justice to God. It also includes self-forgiveness—agreeing with God’s verdict over your life. Some people believe Jesus forgives them, but live as if they are disqualified. Forgiveness reopens the channel of grace: you receive it, and you become free enough to give it.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Who or what have you been rehearsing in your mind—and what is it doing to your spirit?
  2. Is there a certain person you need to forgive, or a specific offense you need to release to God?
  3. Where do you need self-forgiveness—agreeing with mercy and stepping back into freedom?

Prayer Focus: Lord, rehydrate my heart with grace. Help me forgive fully—others and myself—so my life stays tender, alive, and fruitful.

About this Plan

Like a Tree – Devotional

Psalm 1 describes the person who is like a tree planted by streams of water, whose leaves do not wither and who yields fruit in season. They are privately healthy, deeply planted and rooted in the Lord, and publicly fruitful. But how do we live like a tree? This 10-week devotional dives into the key principles of being rooted in God, delighting in His Word, and bearing lasting fruit for His Kingdom.
