Like a Tree – DevotionalSample

YOUR UPKEEP
The Loving Cut
“He… prunes every branch that does bear fruit so that it will be even more fruitful.” - John 15:2 (NIV)
“No discipline seems pleasant at the time… Later… it produces a harvest…” - Hebrews 12:11 (NIV)
Big Idea: God maintains fruitfulness through pruning—removing what drains life so your fruit becomes deeper, sweeter, and lasting.
One of the hardest lessons of spiritual growth is this: God doesn’t only prune what is obviously sinful. He often prunes what is good-looking but ultimately growth-stunting. Some things might look good on the outside and impress others, but not be beneficial for our spiritual lives and progress.
That’s why pruning can feel so personal. It can show up as closed doors, disrupted plans, painful endings, uncomfortable exposure, or the slow removal of a dependence you didn’t realize had become an idol. In the moment, pruning feels like loss or disappointment. But in God’s economy, pruning isn’t punishment. It’s His preparation and upkeep. It’s His refusal to let your life be wasted on what can’t satisfy or what won’t last. It’s a different, but deeper type of grace.
A mature view of pruning asks deep and clarifying questions: Not only “Is this allowed?” but “Is this forming me?” Not only “Does this look fruitful?” but “Does this produce fruit that remains?” Not only “Why is God taking?” but “What is God protecting in me?”
Reflection Questions:
- What might God be pruning right now—an attachment, relationship, pace of life, habit, or identity you’ve leaned on?
- Where are you tempted to interpret pruning as cruelty rather than careful love?
- What kind of fruit do you believe God is aiming for in this season (purity, humility, endurance, peace, integrity, love)?
Prayer Focus: Father, give me trust under the blade. Prune what wastes my life and grow in me fruit that lasts.

About this Plan

Psalm 1 describes the person who is like a tree planted by streams of water, whose leaves do not wither and who yields fruit in season. They are privately healthy, deeply planted and rooted in the Lord, and publicly fruitful. But how do we live like a tree? This 10-week devotional dives into the key principles of being rooted in God, delighting in His Word, and bearing lasting fruit for His Kingdom.
