DAY 15 OF 20

Day 15: Be the Friend

Scripture: John 15:12–13 (NIV)

“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

Jesus says this to His disciples the night before He dies. He’s not speaking in theory. He’s about to do exactly what He’s telling them to do. Lay down His life.

That’s the standard for friendship. Not “love people when it’s convenient.” Not “be a good friend when it benefits you.” Lay-down-your-life love. Self-sacrificing, ego-releasing, show-up-even-when-it-costs-you love.

We’ve spent this week looking at who’s influencing you. But this is the other side: who are you influencing? Are you the kind of friend who sharpens someone else? Are you pointing people toward Jesus, or are you the voice pulling them away?

Here’s the gospel underneath it all. Jesus didn’t just teach us how to be a good friend. He became the friend we needed. One of His closest friends betrayed Him, and He still went to the cross. He didn’t wait for perfect people to love. He laid down His life for imperfect ones. Including you.

Because of that, you have what it takes to love people well. Not from your own strength, but from His. His Spirit in you is what makes you capable of being the kind of friend who forgives, encourages, tells the truth, and stays when it’s hard.

So yes, choose your circle wisely. But also become the kind of friend someone else needs in theirs.

Reflect: What kind of friend are you right now? If your closest friends described your influence on them, what would they say?

Today: Reach out to one friend today and be intentional. Encourage them. Ask what they’re going through. Pray for them. Be the friend Jesus is calling you to be.
