DAY 19 OF 20

Day 19: Talk to Your Soul

Scripture: Psalm 42:11 (NIV)

“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”

The psalmist does something unusual here. He talks to himself. Not in a losing-it kind of way. In a “I need to remind myself what’s true” kind of way.

He’s honest about the emotion. His soul is downcast. Disturbed. Heavy. He doesn’t deny it or push past it. He names it. But then he doesn’t stay there. He redirects. “Put your hope in God.”

This is emotional awareness in action. You feel the weight. You acknowledge it. And then you speak truth over it instead of letting it have the final word.

Most of us do the opposite. We let our emotions talk to us, and we just listen. Anxiety says you’re not enough. Shame says you’ll never change. Loneliness says nobody cares. And we accept it without questioning it.

The psalmist models a different approach. He interrupts the spiral. He asks his own soul a question: “Why?” Not to dismiss the feeling but to examine it. And then he tells his soul where to look: “Put your hope in God.”

You don’t have to be controlled by what you feel. You can feel it, name it, and then remind yourself of what’s true. That’s not denial. That’s faith. And it’s a skill you can build every single day.

Reflect: What has your soul been saying to you lately? If you paused and asked it “why,” what would the answer be?

Today: Try the psalmist’s approach today. When a heavy emotion hits, stop and talk to your own soul. Name the feeling. Then redirect: “Put your hope in God.”
