DAY 16 OF 20

WEEK 4: FEEL IT, DON’T FOLLOW IT

Emotions are real and God-given. But they’re not meant to rule you.

Day 16: Emotions Aren’t the Enemy

Scripture: Philippians 4:4–5 (NIV)

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.”

Paul tells the Philippians to rejoice. Twice. From a jail cell. That should tell you something: rejoicing isn’t about denying what you feel. It’s about anchoring yourself in something bigger than what you feel.

A lot of students get the message, directly or indirectly, that emotions are the problem. That faith means pushing past your feelings. Just pray harder. Just trust more. Don’t be sad. Don’t be anxious. Just believe.

But that’s not what Scripture teaches. God designed you with emotions. Jesus felt grief, anger, compassion, joy, and deep sorrow. Emotions aren’t the enemy. The issue is what we do with them.

Paul doesn’t say “stop feeling things.” He says, “Rejoice in the Lord.” That’s not a feeling. It’s a choice. A decision to anchor your joy in who God is, not in what’s happening around you. Think of joy like an anchor in a storm. The waves are real. The wind is real. But the anchor keeps you from drifting.

Then he says, “The Lord is near.” That changes everything. You’re not managing your emotions alone. God is close. Present. Aware of what you’re carrying.

This week, we’re not trying to fix your emotions. We’re learning how to bring them to the right place.

Reflect: What emotion has felt the loudest in your life recently? Have you been treating it as something to fix or something to bring to God?

Today: Name what you’re feeling right now. Don’t judge it. Just name it. Then tell God about it as honestly as you can.
