WEEK 4: IMPACT
Success that ends with you isn't success. It's just accumulation.
Day 16: Salt Doesn't Stay in the Shaker
Scripture: Matthew 5:13 (NIV)
"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot."
Salt sitting in a shaker doesn't do anything. It has to get out and make contact with something to actually work.
Jesus calls His followers salt. Not because it's a flattering metaphor, but because it's an accurate one. Salt preserves things from rotting. It brings out flavor. It changes whatever it touches. But only if it actually touches something.
The temptation is to keep your faith contained. Church on Sunday, maybe a youth group on Wednesday, and then the rest of the week you blend in. You keep the salt in the shaker because it's safer there. Less awkward. Less risk of being judged or misunderstood.
But Jesus says salt that stays in the shaker is useless. Worse than useless, actually. It's good for nothing.
Your faith was never meant to be a private thing you manage on the side. It's supposed to get into your school, your job, your friendships, your future business, your neighborhood. Not in a preachy way. In a presence way. The way you treat people. The way you handle conflict. The way you show up when things are hard.
That's salt doing what salt does. And the world around you needs it more than you probably realize.
Reflect: Where in your life is your faith currently "in the shaker"? What's keeping it there?
Today: Find one place today where you can be salt. Stop a negative conversation. Encourage someone who's struggling. Do something kind without making it a thing. Just make contact.

About this Plan

Kingdom Grind is a 20-day devotional designed to help high school students connect their faith to real, everyday life. Over four weeks, students explore four foundational themes —vision, integrity, stewardship, and impact — through Scripture, honest reflection, and a practical daily action step. Each devotional is grounded, direct, and built for students who want their faith to shape not just who they are, but what they build.
