DAY 12 OF 20

Day 12: The Joy of the Lord Is Your Strength

Scripture: Nehemiah 8:10 (NIV)
"Nehemiah said, 'Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.'"

The joy of the Lord is your strength. Not your own happiness. Not positive thinking. Not pretending everything's fine. The joy of the Lord.

There's a difference. Your own happiness is dependent on circumstances. When things go well, you feel good. When they don't, you don't. That kind of happiness is real, but it's fragile. It can't hold you up when life gets heavy.

The joy of the Lord is different because its source doesn't change. God's goodness doesn't fluctuate with your circumstances. His faithfulness doesn't take days off. His love for you isn't affected by how your week is going. And when your joy is rooted in those things, it can hold you up even when everything around you is falling apart.

That's what strength means here. Not that you feel great all the time. But that you have something underneath you that doesn't give way when the pressure comes. Like a foundation that holds even when the walls are shaking.

You access that joy the same way you access any source of strength. You stay connected to it. You remind yourself of what's true about God when your feelings are telling you something different. You choose it, even when it doesn't come naturally.

Reflect: What's draining your strength most right now? Have you been trying to refuel from the right source?

Today: When you feel depleted today, instead of reaching for a distraction, spend two minutes reminding yourself of something true about God. Let that be your recharge.
