John goes on to quote Jesus saying he is the true vine. The vine is shown frequently in the Old Testament as inadequate or lacking, but in this picture, Jesus is saying he is the true vine and his followers are the branches. He goes on to speak of two categories of branches: fruitless and fruitful. Much like a branch needs to stay connected to a tree in order to bear fruit, Jesus says we must abide in him and stay spiritually connected to him in order to have true life. He goes on to reassure his followers that although this world will bring tribulation, he as overcome it all for us.
