Uncharted

DAY 11 OF 30

This is a popular verse from the book of Hebrews, but it is often taken out of context and easily misunderstood. On its own, the verse presents a truth that is pretty easy to understand: that God cares more about our hearts and our trust in Him than about our actions. This doesn’t discount our behaviors, because what we do reflects what we truly believe (James 2:14-17). However, as this passage shows, merely "going through the motions" isn’t what God is looking for. Those who want to please God need to have faith, not simple agreement and cooperation.

The tricky part is that we often think of faith as either "blind faith" or wishful thinking. We tend to hope things will work out. But the writer of Hebrews is not advocating for naïve optimism. The chapter is full of examples of people who stepped into uncharted territory because they trusted God’s character and plan. Their faith wasn’t naïve or “blind.” Instead, it was rooted in God’s proven track record.

Faith is believing that God is who He says He is. It’s trusting that He has His best planned for us. It’s knowing that He will always be there for us, walking alongside us even when the path is unclear. So, when you find yourself faced with an unclear decision or stuck in a confusing situation, remember that God isn’t asking you to take a step into the dark. He’s asking you to step toward a lit path, toward a path that He has set before you. Faith doesn’t always take away our insecurity, apprehension, or anxiety. But it does make the unknown a place where God can show up and demonstrate how faithful He truly is.

About this Plan

Uncharted

Seasons of life can feel uncertain or uncharted—no clear map. No instructions. Just a nudge to move forward, even when you’re not sure where you’re going. Faith can feel the same way. It can sometimes feel like we’re following God into places that feel too big, too strange, or too complicated. In this devotional, we’ll walk with Moses and wrestle with what it means to trust a God who invites us to move forward even when the road ahead is uncertain.
