Uncharted

DAY 28 OF 30

Jesus knew His time was short, so in His final hours with His disciples, He used the image of a vineyard to explain how they could live fruitful lives after His death. Jesus described Himself as the vine, His followers the branches, and God as the gardener who tends to and cares for them.

A gardener, or vinedresser, is more than just a farmer. He understands each plant fully. He knows how they grow, what they need, and when they need it. And he understands that pruning is necessary to strengthen the vines and promote growth.

In the same way, Jesus reminds us in this passage that, to produce fruit, we must abide in Christ. We must remain on the vine. Producing fruit is not automatic for Christians; it’s not about just believing in Christ. As Jesus explains, we cannot produce fruit through our own effort. Just as a branch can’t grow a grape by trying harder, we can’t produce spiritual fruit away from Christ.

How can we allow God to be the gardener in our own lives? As this passage urges, we can start by remaining in Christ. Allow the Word of God to dwell in you richly, and God will follow through on His promise—you will bear meaningful fruit that lasts.

About this Plan

Uncharted

Seasons of life can feel uncertain or uncharted—no clear map. No instructions. Just a nudge to move forward, even when you’re not sure where you’re going. Faith can feel the same way. It can sometimes feel like we’re following God into places that feel too big, too strange, or too complicated. In this devotional, we’ll walk with Moses and wrestle with what it means to trust a God who invites us to move forward even when the road ahead is uncertain.
