DAY 4 OF 21

Day 4 – BELOVED: Seen

Scripture: Genesis 16

You want to read about some serious family drama? The Bible doesn’t shy away from it. The story of Abram, Sarai, and Hagar is messy, painful, and deeply human. It reminds us that even people of great faith can make harmful choices.

Abram and Sarai are often remembered as giants of faith. God had promised to build a great nation through them, yet years passed and nothing seemed to change. Sarai grew tired of waiting and took matters into her own hands. She arranged for Hagar, a young Egyptian servant with little power or choice, to become pregnant by Abram.

Hagar didn’t ask to be part of this story. She was pulled into someone else’s plan, and once she became pregnant, everything changed. Tension grew inside the household. Sarai treated Hagar harshly, and Abram did nothing to protect her. What started as someone else’s solution became Hagar’s suffering.

Eventually, Hagar ran away. Alone. Pregnant. Walking into the desert with no clear destination and no protection. To everyone else, she was just a runaway servant. Easy to overlook. Easy to forget.

But God did not forget her.

In the middle of the desert, the Lord met Hagar. He spoke to her by name. He acknowledged her pain. He reminded her that her life and her child mattered. In response, Hagar did something remarkable. She gave God a name, calling Him El Roi meaning, “the God who sees me.” For the first time, someone truly saw her.

God’s presence did not instantly erase her circumstances, but it changed how she faced them. With new strength and hope, Hagar chose to move forward, trusting that her situation was not the end of her story.

If you find yourself in a situation you didn’t choose, feeling unseen or unheard, know this: God sees you. Even when others overlook you. Even when your circumstances feel unfair. You are not invisible to Him.

Hold on to Him. Trust His presence. Your story is still unfolding.

You are BELOVED.
And you are seen.

About this Plan

BeLOVE(d)

You are Beloved. Called to be loved. Sent to be love. This 21-day devotional invites students to discover who they are in Christ, learn how to receive God’s love, and live that love out daily. Through Scripture, honest reflection, and real-life examples, students will explore their identity, respond to God’s invitation, and grow in what it means to love like Jesus. Whether faith feels new or familiar, this plan challenges students to trust God’s heart, choose His way, and let love shape how they live.
